I’m an artist and writer who grew up in Wichita, but I’ve moved around for various graduate programs, including spending a year in Berlin, Germany, researching the history of camera-less photography. After I started my magazine “DARIA: Denver Art Review, Inquiry, and Analysis,” all about the Colorado Front Range visual art scene, I wanted to create a magazine devoted to artists and art venues in my home state of Kansas. I got connected to Emily Christensen in 2022, and when she and Teri Mott received a grant to start the SHOUT in late 2023, they invited me to be the visual art editor. It’s been a great experience and has helped me fulfill my dream of promoting visual art in Kansas and highlighting hidden gems.

I’ve always known I wanted to be an artist, and when I was an art student at Northeast Magnet High School, I fell in love with art history and darkroom photography (I went on to receive degrees in both). I was lucky enough to have two incredible Wichita-based photo artists as mentors: Dale Strattman and Linda Robinson. And at Wichita State I received an incredible art history education by working in the slide library under Kathy Hull and taking classes from various professors, including Fritz Hemans, Annette LeZotte, Lisa Rosenthal, Patrick Smith, and Liz Willis. I draw on my art history and photography education in my work for the SHOUT (I edit the reviews as well as the photos), and I’m looking forward to continuing to expand our coverage to art shows in all four corners of the state!
