In the Galleries: Sheldon Draper at Mulberry Art Gallery
A handful of the Wichita artist’s gestural mixed media paintings are on view through September 22.
Wichita painter Sheldon Draper has a knack for experimenting while staying true to himself.
The 10 paintings on view through September 22 at Mulberry Art Gallery center on music, one of the artist's preoccupations, and they include his trademark collage materials (cigarette boxes, price tags).
But in this series, Draper limits his palette to mostly primary colors. And, while not a traditional figurative painter, he leans even farther into abstraction. These paintings have a loose, slapdash quality. Aesthetically, it works, particularly in "Love Is Everywhere," "Music Dream," and "Champion Sound." But the construction could be neater. In "Playing Outside," for example, threads hang from the bottom of the canvas.
