I finally made it to Kansas City to see an exhibition by Wichita artists Meghan Miller and Mike Miller, whose "When the Extraterrestrials come, they will judge us by the quality our Art!" closes this Friday at Leedy-Voulkos Art Center, 2012 Baltimore Ave. in the Crossroads Arts District.

The artists, whom I wrote about in 2022 for the Wichita Eagle, have distinct aesthetic approaches but share an interest in whimsy, play, and creative use (and reuse) of materials.

All three are present in the couple's collaborative work "tie-flatable," which debuted at Somewhere Fest in 2025. The tent is made from tie-dyed sheets Meghan Miller created for "Dreaming Canopy," a 2024 exhibition at Butler Community College. Inside, visitors can sweep up and scatter confetti and ride stationary bikes to inflate a giant hand.

Works from Mike Miller's Machine-Nature Interface series dominate the rest of the gallery space. Like "tie-flatable," many are interactive and/or kinetic. In an open doorway overlooking the street, a beat-up antique oil drum spins on a metal-rod base.

Shows by Jim Leedy, Marn Jensen, and Mandy Johnson are also on view at Leedy-Voulkos through the 29th.

The Leedy-Voulkos Art Center is accessible by stairs, and the building is not air-conditioned.
