Three Wichita State art and design students won cash awards at the Emerging Artists Show, on view through tomorrow at the new ShiftSpace gallery inside Harvester Arts at the Lux, 120 E. 1st St. N. in Wichita.

Visiting artist Devan Shimoyama, whose work is now on view at the Ulrich Museum of Art, served as this year's judge. He announced the winners during a reception on February 28.

Zelda McAfee, one of the SHOUT's spring interns, took the top undergraduate prize with a series of work about childhood. Her manipulated photographs are displayed refrigerator-art-style. Graphic design student Kristofer Cruspero won the $500 undergrad prize, and Farzaneh Hajighasemi received the $1,000 graduate award.

The annual exhibition organized by the Wichita State Art & Design Advocates includes work by some of the best students in the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries. It's an early opportunity for Wichita audiences to see (and purchase) the output of young and up-and-coming artists.

This semester marks the first time ShiftSpace, WSU's student-run gallery, has had a permanent location since its space at Groover Labs closed in 2023.
