Bam, dot, crack: Love of Character hosts a popular mahjong club
Mahjong madness in east Wichita
Mahjong isn't just your grandmother’s game anymore, and that's apparent on Mondays at Love of Character, 302 N. Rock Road.
Tucked in the back of the store, behind an array of balloons, cards, stationery, and hosting essentials, is the Green Table Club, a mahjong social group that meets on Mondays.
Three-hour sessions start at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., though players are welcome to come and go. Love of Character provides sets, 2025 cards, snacks and sodas. Members get discounts, but players can also drop in for a one-time fee. Preregistration is required via the Green Table Club website.
On the afternoon I joined open play, there were seven tables full of players, snacks, and sodas. The space buzzed with chatter, clacking tiles, and triumphant shouts of “mahjong!”
The Green Table Club suggests players have a basic understanding of the game, but teachers are available to answer questions during play.
For those interested in learning, Wichita Parks and Recreation has classes for beginners starting in October, and Mod Mahj Wichita offers on-demand, in-person lessons.
