Where We’ve Been: The Showcase with DJ Sunshine
A local DJ Showcase at Kirby's allows artists to flaunt their abilities.
Imagine you’re driving along 17th Street in Wichita on a Tuesday night and hear intense bass thumps from the dive bar known as Kirby’s Beer Store. With a curious ear, you stop to find out what’s fueling the party: It’s The Showcase, a rotating monthly selection of local DJs curated by Sam Shea, otherwise known as DJ Sunshine.
On the final Tuesday of each month, Shea organizes a local selection of DJs of all skill levels to spin what they wish, whether it’s a newcomers’ latest noise project or an industry veteran’s original music.
“This is an opportunity for artists to showcase their abilities, their talent and their passion,” Shea said in an interview on the Kirby's patio before his set.
As a DJ teacher, producer, karaoke business owner and showcase host, Shea aims to nurture other artists while keeping audiences engaged. After several years in the industry, he’s making strides — notably his debut at Dancefestopia, an annual music, arts, and camping festival in Kansas City.
Even with a world of opportunities and the talent to match, Shea still keeps his motivation in mind: a non-stop love of the beat.
“Tonight’s not about money, it’s about the passion of music,” he said. You can hear the excitement in his voice.
After our interview, Shea and I ventured back inside to listen to Desstrippy, who brought a quick-moving bass breakbeat vibe. Before her set, Marc Lujan (working under one of his stage names, InjunTrubl) played an eclectic original music mix. With an ever-changing lineup, The Showcase provides a different experience each month in a legendary local music venue with an indoor legal capacity of less than 40. The event is 21+ and there’s no charge at the door, which makes it a great opportunity to explore a different kind of nightlife. The lineup kicks off at 10 p.m.
Shea’s next Showcase is Wednesday, May 28 at the same time and place.
It’s never too late to get into EDM.
